The 116th US Congress has been sworn in with a newly-elected Democratic majority in the House of Representatives amid an ongoing partial government shutdown the ending of which will be the first order of business.
November’s US midterm elections left Congress a legislative branch divided after the Democratic Party flipped what would eventually be around ۴۰ seats to take control of the 435-member House of Representatives. Republicans, meanwhile, kept their majority — and even gained two seats — in the 100-member Senate.
President Donald Trump and Democratic lawmakers during talks at the White House on Wednesday failed to reach a compromise to end a shutdown that started on December 22 because of disputes over border wall funding.
